The flow of a family business

50s

Tied to the land

The history of Grup Moragas began with Ricard Moragas, the owner of the Els Clopés farmhouse in Sant Hilari Sacalm. The agricultural sector began to mechanise in the 1950s, and Ricard decided to stop working with animal traction and to use tractors, enabling him to do more work in less time. For this reason, and to make his new vehicles profitable, he began to offer farming services to neighbouring farmhouses and to work in forestry. His wife, Núria Recasens, supported him from the very beginning. That was the beginning of the Group’s long tradition of service.

60s

Forest, fields and water

Ricard bought two-axle trucks in the early 1960s to increase the load capacity of the trailers he took to the forest. At the same time, the owner of the Els Clopés farmhouse opened a small bottled water business – what is today Font Vella – which was mainly drunk in Barcelona in the summer. Forestry work was very limited at that time of year, and that led Ricard to begin transporting water during the summer, while he continued to work as a farmer and forester the rest of the year. Ricard and Núria’s three sons, Isidre, Josep and Joan, were used to driving tractors and operating tools from an early age, and helped with both agricultural and transport tasks.

70s

The commitment to transport

In the mid-1970s, the time came to decide whether the family would continue farming or move to Sant Hilari Sacalm to grow its transport business. The business around the water spring had grown considerably and needed a year-round transport service, so the family decided to move into transport, and moved to the village.

80s

Growth of the family business

The transport company grew to seven trucks in the 1980s. Ricard gave up driving to specialise in maintenance, Núria answered the phone, and their three sons drove the trucks, coordinated by Isidre, the eldest. The company Ricard Moragas i Fills was set up in 1988, led by the three brothers, helped by their father’s extensive wisdom and experience.

90s

Start of storage

The demands of the market led to the establishment of the company Magatzems Sant Hilari in 1992. It offered storage services, primarily for Font Vella, its main client, which had its production centre in Sant Hilari and wanted its logistical support to be as near as possible. The first warehouse in the La Bòbila industrial estate opened its doors in 1996, and three more warehouses followed it as the company grew. As their responsibilities and the people working under them increased, the Moragas brothers stopped driving to focus on the organisational side: Isidre, on traffic; Josep on maintenance, and Joan, on administration and management.

00s

Specialised logistics

With the warehousing division fully consolidated, the company Aporta was established with external partners in 2005. Since the outset, it has taken advantage of the experience of Grup Moragas to focus on managing the client dispatch department at their own facilities.

10s

A Group with challenges for the future

The third generation of the family, consisting of Elisabet, Blanca and Marta Moragas, joined the company in 2014. All three have training and experience in other companies, and have brought a fresh momentum to the Group, taking up the legacy and strategic vision of their uncle Joan. Together they face a future full of challenges with the aim of continuing to make Grup Moragas grow, without losing sight of the values and excellent service that have always characterised the company.
